On the Issues
Due to Secretary Castro never being elected to federal office, he has not had the same opportunities to support or cosponsor legislation that ANA has championed as some of the other presidential candidates. This does not necessarily indicate that, if he were to be the presidential nominee, he would not potentially be strong on nursing issues.
Health Care Reform
Secretary Castro supports Medicare for All but has not backed a specific bill or proposal both in public comments or during his tenures as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and Mayor of San Antonio. He indicated he would consider paying for such a system by raising taxes on corporations and on the wealthiest “0.05, 0.5 or 1 percent” of Americans.
In the October 2019 Democratic primary debate, Mr. Castro said that he wants to hold executives of pharmaceutical companies financially and criminally liable for the opioid epidemic.
